HTH: Take Me to Church

Share:

Hope This Helps (HTH) is a series, where fellow youth workers share resources they’ve found helpful in ministry.  Of course, some things work in some churches and not others.  But, as always, hope this helps.

My female youth ministry counterpart taught a Sunday school lesson featuring an offensive but telling song by pop artist Hozier. Take Me to Church sounds like it would be a religious song. In reality, the singer refers to his girlfriend’s bedroom as church. He paints sex as the pinnacle of human experience. This song illustrates the nature of idolatry, as the speaker details his worship of his girlfriend. We have used this song to illustrate the way that the culture can uphold sex as a god.
